The Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists will give their first-ever performance in the newly restored Great Hall of the North Wing of St Bartholomew’s Hospital on Wednesday 12 November – marking a milestone in London’s cultural calendar and celebrating the reopening of one of the city’s most magnificent historic interiors.
1. Experience Baroque Music in a Newly Restored Masterpiece
The concert celebrates the reopening of an 18th-century architectural gem following a £9.5 million restoration. Built in 1734, the Great Hall has been meticulously conserved to reveal its splendour, complete with the dramatic Hogarth Stair and murals by William Hogarth that embody the grandeur of the Baroque era.
2. Hear Bach, Purcell and Handel as They Were Meant to Be Heard
Audiences will enjoy an exquisite programme of works by J.S. Bach, Purcell and Handel performed in a setting that perfectly mirrors the music’s opulence. The concert opens with Purcell’s Hear My Prayer, continues with Bach’s Der Geist hilft and Singet dem Herrn, and concludes with Handel’s dazzling Dixit Dominus.
3. Step Into History with Music That Defined an Era
When the North Wing was completed in 1734, Bach was at the height of his powers in Leipzig. From around this time come two of his choral masterpieces — Der Geist hilft (1729) and Singet dem Herrn (1727). Meanwhile, Handel, then England’s greatest composer and friend to Hogarth himself, was writing some of his most ambitious works. His Dixit Dominus closes the concert with exuberant choral brilliance.
4. A Partnership Between Music and Architecture
This new collaboration with St Bart’s continues the Monteverdi Choir & Orchestras’ mission to bring fresh drama and authenticity to historic spaces. Performing in venues such as St Martin-in-the-Fields and the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, they connect audiences to the living spirit of Baroque music.
“Stunning heritage locations bring the music of the past to life in such a special way,” says Rosa Solinas, General Director of the Monteverdi Choir & Orchestras. “We are thrilled to open this new chapter for London audiences in one of the city’s most extraordinary historic settings.”
