5 Things to Know About Whipsnade Zoo’s Wild Bank Holiday Birthday Bash

This early May bank holiday, Whipsnade Zoo is throwing a party like no other to celebrate 200 years of Zoological Society of London. Running from Saturday 2 to Monday 4 May, it’s a family-friendly celebration packed with activities, animals, and a proper festival atmosphere.

1. A 200-Year Celebration with a Party Twist

ZSL’s bicentenary is being marked in style with a full-on street party across the zoo. Expect decorations, music, and a lively atmosphere as one of the UK’s most iconic conservation organisations celebrates two centuries of wildlife protection.

2. Classic Party Food (with a Zoo Day Out)

This isn’t just any day at the zoo. Visitors can tuck into nostalgic treats like cake, jelly, ice cream, popcorn and candyfloss—perfect fuel for a long day exploring the UK’s largest zoo.

3. Games and Activities with an Animal Spin

From Animal Limbo to “Animal Statues”, the games all come with a wild twist. There are also fairground-style activities like hook-a-flamingo and penguin shuffle, plus “zoo-robics” where kids can run, jump and move like their favourite animals.

4. Live Music and Chill-Out Moments

After all the action, there’s plenty of time to relax. Families can enjoy a teddy bear’s picnic, get involved in arts and crafts, or sit back and listen to live performances from groups like the Rock Choir.

5. Meet the Animals (and Learn Something New)

With over 11,000 animals, including new arrivals like giraffe calves and a young rhino, there’s plenty to see. Special birthday-themed talks will also highlight ZSL’s global conservation work, giving visitors a deeper understanding of how their visit supports wildlife around the world.
