York’s famous Shambles Market is turning into a magical family destination this May half-term with owl trails, evening markets, street food and live entertainment all taking place in the heart of the historic city.
1. Families can take part in a free Magical Owl Trail
From 20–27 May, families can hunt for ten hidden owls around the market while exploring the stalls and hidden corners of Shambles Market. Free trail cards will be available from the Visit York Visitor Information Centre, with stickers for completed entries.
2. A special Magical Night Market is coming to York
On 25 May, the market will stay open late for a magical evening event featuring around 40 independent traders, artisan crafts, street food, themed entertainment and roaming performers.
3. It links with the city-wide WizardFest celebrations
The half-term programme ties into WizardFest, which takes place across York with activities including wand making, dragon encounters, LEGO workshops, bubble shows, trails and fancy dress parades.
4. There’s plenty of independent shopping and food
The market remains one of York’s best destinations for independent shopping, artisan gifts, flowers, crafts and international street food, with the Shambles Food Court offering food from around the world.
5. Historic performances are returning to the market later this year
York Mystery Plays will return to Shambles Market this summer with twilight performances inspired by medieval storytelling traditions taking place across late June and July.
