Here are five things about the “Collect My Tree” service in Molesey:
- Service Areas: In January 2024, “Collect My Tree” will be collecting Christmas trees from specific postcodes in Molesey, as well as Long Ditton, Thames Ditton, Esher, and certain streets in Hinchley Wood. They are unable to collect trees outside these areas this year.
- Operated by Scout Group: This service is operated by the 1st Weston Green Scout Group. The funds raised through this service help young people in the local community learn valuable skills for life through scouting activities.
- Tree Collection Process: Customers are advised to book their collection as soon as possible due to limited collection capacity. The service collects Christmas trees but does not accept Christmas wreaths, as these often contain materials that cannot be chipped.
- Disposal of Collected Trees: The collected trees are piled up on land provided by Sandown Park racecourse and are then converted into woodchip biomass by Greenwood’s Tree Contractors. This biomass is used to generate renewable electricity at a combined heat and power plant in Kent.
- Collection Guidelines and Fund Usage: Trees should be left outside, on the property, but not against hedges or on public highways. The trees need to be intact and unwrapped, with all decorations removed. The donations collected from this service are used to keep subscription fees affordable for families and to purchase equipment for various scouting activities, including camping and expeditions.
