What is the Phantom of the Opera about?

The Phantom of the Opera is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s world-famous musical, first staged in 1986. Set in the Paris Opera House, it tells the story of a mysterious masked man who lives beneath the theatre and secretly tutors a young singer, Christine Daaé. Blending romance, obsession, and haunting music, the show explores love, jealousy, and the power of compassion.

  1. The musical opens at an auction in 1911, where an old Raoul buys a music box from the Paris Opera House.
  2. The famous chandelier is revealed, and the story flashes back to 1881.
  3. At the opera, Carlotta, the prima donna, storms out after mysterious disturbances.
  4. Christine Daaé, a chorus girl secretly trained by the Phantom, takes Carlotta’s place and dazzles the audience.
  5. Christine tells her friend Meg Giry that she is taught by the “Angel of Music,” whom she believes was sent by her late father.
  6. Christine reunites with her childhood friend Raoul, now the Vicomte de Chagny, and they rekindle their bond.
  7. The Phantom lures Christine down to his underground lair in the song The Phantom of the Opera.
  8. Christine unmasks him, revealing his horribly deformed face, enraging the Phantom.
  9. Back at the opera house, the managers receive threatening letters from the Phantom demanding Christine star in productions.
  10. Carlotta is given the lead in Il Muto instead, but the Phantom sabotages the performance, reducing Carlotta to a frog-like croak.
  11. During the chaos, the chandelier crashes dramatically onto the stage, causing havoc.
  12. In All I Ask of You, Christine and Raoul confess their love on the rooftop, unaware the Phantom is listening.
  13. The Phantom vows vengeance in All I Ask of You (Reprise) as the chandelier rises menacingly.
  14. In Act II, at the Masquerade Ball, the Phantom appears in a striking Red Death costume, demanding his new opera, Don Juan Triumphant, be performed.
  15. On opening night, the Phantom murders the tenor Piangi and takes his place opposite Christine.
  16. He abducts Christine again mid-performance, dragging her to his lair, with Raoul in pursuit.
  17. In the climax, Christine’s compassion and kiss soften the Phantom, who releases Raoul and Christine, then vanishes, leaving only his mask behind on the throne.
