Can You Go to the Natural History Museum Without a Ticket? 5 Things to Know

Visiting London’s Natural History Museum is a brilliant experience – and yes, you can go without a ticket. General admission is free, but there are a few things to keep in mind to make the most of your day.

1. You Don’t Need a Ticket – But Booking is Recommended
You don’t have to pay to get in, but the museum encourages visitors to book a free timed entry ticket to help manage crowds, especially during weekends and school holidays. You can book your slot on the Natural History Museum website.

2. Arrive Early or Visit Later in the Day
To avoid queues and enjoy a quieter experience, plan to arrive when the museum opens at 10am or later in the afternoon. It tends to be busiest around lunchtime.

3. Some Exhibitions Do Require Tickets
While the main galleries are free, special exhibitions (like the Wildlife Photographer of the Year) often have an entry fee. Check what’s on before you go and book in advance if something catches your eye.

4. Use the Side Entrance
The main entrance on Cromwell Road can get very busy. There’s a side entrance on Exhibition Road that usually has shorter queues – a great tip for families with young children.

5. Pack Light
There’s limited space in the cloakrooms, and large bags or suitcases aren’t allowed in the galleries. Try to bring only essentials, especially if you’re planning to visit other museums in the area.
