How to Care for Your Diamond Ring

A diamond ring can represent a significant financial outlay. It can also be a source of tremendous sentimental value. If you’re lucky enough to own one, therefore, it might be a good idea to learn to look after it. That way, it will last for a lifetime.

Importance of Regular Care

A ring isn’t just a very expensive item. It’s also a delicate item that might be exposed to regular stress. After all, you’re wearing it on the part of your body with which you interact with the world around you.

By regularly caring for the ring, you can reverse any damage – and become aware of any problems that might develop further down the line. For example, if you notice that the prongs are beginning to warp, you might get them attended to before the gemstone has a chance to pop out.

Simple Cleaning Techniques

You can often clean your diamond ring via a handful of simple techniques. You can use hot water (but not boiling water), some soap and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Leave the item to soak, preferably overnight, before scrubbing. Once you’re done, pat it dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners.

Whatever you do, make sure that the drain in the sink is covered. Or, better yet, clean the ring well away from any drains.

Professional Maintenance

At-home, DIY cleaning has a major advantage over the professional sort: it’s free. Thus, it can be performed at regular intervals. However, it’s worth supplementing this ongoing maintenance with a more exhaustive cleaning process – the kind that can only be performed by a professional.

Safe Storage Practices

What do you do with your rings when you aren’t wearing them? You’ll want to take them off at certain points – like if you’re going to be performing exercise or hard, manual work, or if you’re sleeping. Make sure that you have a suitable place to store it. This might be a special velvet-lined jewellery box – or, it might be an assortment of special dishes that you keep around the house, near to places where you might be tempted to remove the ring.

Handling Precautions

Rings are designed to absorb a fair bit of punishment. However, you can still scratch or otherwise damage the ring if you aren’t careful. Make sure that you don’t polish your jewellery too frequently – since the act of polishing removes metal, which can lead to the item becoming thinner and more fragile over the years. If the item is likely to come in contact with rocks, grit, or other harsh material, then you’ll want to be careful. If you’re visiting the beach, make sure that you know exactly where you’re stashing it.
