Doctor Who 2023: Celebrating 60 Years with New Specials, Returning Stars, and the Debut of the Fifteenth Doctor
- 60th Anniversary Specials: The anniversary specials, “The Star Beast,” “Wild Blue Yonder,” and “The Giggle,” marked significant milestones. These specials featured David Tennant and Catherine Tate, bringing a sense of nostalgia and continuation from their earlier roles in the series. Tennant’s return as the Fourteenth Doctor, resembling his Tenth Doctor, and Tate’s return as Donna Noble were particularly notable for long-time fans.
- Broadcasting Collaboration with Disney+: In a strategic move, “Doctor Who” episodes began streaming on Disney+ outside the UK and Ireland. This started with the 60th-anniversary specials and continued into Season 14, showcasing a significant shift in how the series is distributed globally.
- Supplemental Episodes – “Destination: Skaro” and “The Way Back Home”: These episodes provided additional content to the fans. “Destination: Skaro” offered a humorous take on the creation of the Daleks, one of the show’s most iconic adversaries. “The Way Back Home” featured the Doctor reflecting on a children’s story by Oliver Jeffers, drawing parallels to his own experiences.
- Casting and Character Returns: The return of Tennant and Tate was a highlight. Additionally, Ncuti Gatwa’s debut as the Fifteenth Doctor marked a significant transition in the series. The presence of familiar characters like Donna Noble, along with new introductions, created a blend of the familiar and the novel.
- Guest Appearances and Character Development: The specials saw appearances from characters like Sylvia Noble, Shaun Temple, and new characters like Rose Noble. Neil Patrick Harris played the Toymaker, a throwback to an earlier character from the 1960s. These guest appearances and the development of new and old characters alike added depth and intrigue to the anniversary specials.
