Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Mona Lisa Musical: Five Things We Know So Far

The new Andrew Lloyd Webber Mona Lisa musical will turn one of history’s most famous art thefts into a major stage production. Based on the true story of the painting’s disappearance from the Louvre, the show promises crime, comedy and some characteristically big songs.

1. It is based on the theft of the Mona Lisa

Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre in Paris in 1911. Its disappearance became an international news story and helped make the painting even more famous.

2. The thief had worked at the Louvre

Vincenzo Peruggia removed the painting from the museum and kept it hidden in his Paris flat for more than two years. He reportedly believed that the masterpiece should be returned to Italy.

3. It will mix comedy with big songs

Producer Michael Harrison has said the musical will make audiences laugh but will also contain some “very big songs”. Andrew Lloyd Webber is said to be enjoying writing its melodies.

4. The production is moving forward quickly

Harrison has suggested that the musical could be brought to the stage “swiftly”. A theatre and opening date have not yet been confirmed, but development appears to be progressing well. Read the latest production update.
