Cats is back in London at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, and it feels like a very good fit for the space. Here are five quick thoughts after seeing it.
1. Regent’s Park is a brilliant setting
The show gets better as the light fades and the theatre becomes darker. The outdoor setting adds something special and makes the whole thing feel a little more magical.
2. The dancing is excellent
This is probably the strongest part of the production. The cast are incredibly energetic and the choreography keeps the show moving, even when the story itself is fairly thin.
3. Memory is still the big moment
It is the song everyone is waiting for and it does not disappoint. Hearing it outdoors as the evening draws in is one of the highlights of the show.
4. The story is still a bit odd
If you have never seen Cats before, do not expect a normal musical with a clear storyline. It is really a collection of characters, songs and dance numbers, which will work better for some people than others.
5. It makes for a great summer evening out
The setting, music and dancing make this a very enjoyable night at the theatre. Even if Cats has never been your favourite musical, this production is well worth seeing.
