If you’ve got a taste for experimental sounds, surreal melodies, and rich, psychedelic instrumentation, Crayola Lectern should be on your radar. With a string of live performances lined up and a brand-new album on the way, here are five reasons to catch them live this autumn.

1. A Live Line-Up Like No Other
Crayola Lectern aren’t your standard band. Their live set is a beautifully orchestrated emporium of psychedelia, filled with piano, mellotron, saxophone, trumpet, cornet, glockenspiel, drums and layered percussion. It’s a textured, immersive experience that’s as visual as it is sonic.
2. The Vision of Chris Anderson
At the helm is Chris Anderson, the creative force who founded Crayola Lectern to explore the outer limits of sound. His musical pedigree includes collaborations with Bic Hayes (Cardiacs) in ZOFF and Levitation, work with Peter Buck from R.E.M. in Departure Lounge, and his contributions to Helicopter of the Holy Ghost.
3. Sharing the Stage with the Best
Chris shares a label with some of the UK’s most exciting underground acts, including Hurtling, Stephen EvEns, Barringtone, and William D Drake – an original member of Cardiacs. Crayola Lectern will be supporting William D Drake at The George Tavern on 29 August, and again at The Rosehill in Brighton on 27 September, and The Sunfold in Weston-Super-Mare on 10 October.
4. For Fans of Bold, Beautiful Sound
If you’re into the lush, leftfield genius of Robert Wyatt, the trippy optimism of Flaming Lips, or the cinematic grandeur of Mercury Rev, you’ll find a new obsession in Crayola Lectern. There are even flashes of Fred Frith-style experimentalism for those who enjoy the more abstract corners of music.
5. New Album ‘Disasternoon’ Out Now
Crayola Lectern’s much-anticipated new album Disasternoon drops on 15 August, with the title track already out as of 20 June. It’s a record that promises to expand their sound even further – rich in character, colour and charm.
Don’t miss Crayola Lectern live this autumn:
- 29 August – The George Tavern (supporting William D Drake)
- 27 September – The Rosehill, Brighton
- 10 October – The Sunfold, Weston-Super-Mare
