If you are keen to make sure you are doing your bit for the environment, it is best to start, as with all charity, at home. If you are able to make some basic changes in your own home, you should find that you can make it much more eco-efficient, and in the process you are going to be leading a much more environmentally friendly life in general. So here are five of the best ways to improve your eco-efficiency at home that you may want to consider.

Install A Water Butt

Having a water butt in your garden to catch rainwater will ensure that you are using less water from the tap. You can use this water to water your garden, and itโ€™s a much more effective and efficient means of doing so than using the tap. Saving on water is one of the most important things we need to do, so itโ€™s really important that you can do this.

Choose Your Appliances Carefully

Likewise, when you are buying appliances for the home, youโ€™ll want to make sure that you are choosing between the different options as carefully as possible. In terms of a top load vs front load washer, for instance, a front-load washer is considerably more energy efficient, as they use less water and have shorter cycles.

Turn Electrical Items Off After Use

As far as possible, try to remember to turn off any electrical items that you may have been using. Leaving something on standby can be quite damaging, and itโ€™s amazing what it can do in terms of energy usage, so itโ€™s best to completely turn off TVs, radios and so on after you have used them, and certainly donโ€™t leave them on overnight.

Insulate

If you are not sure about the level of insulation in your home, you might want to think about this too. Improving the insulation is going to mean that you are much more likely to keep the warmth in effectively, and that reduces your need to warm the home up more, using more energy. Itโ€™s simple but hugely effective.

Swap Bulbs

Finally, a very simple thing you can do which will help a lot is to swap your light bulbs for energy-saving ones. If you still have any older light bulbs in place, you might want to swap them out as soon as possible. You will find that the newer ones really do use a lot less energy – and you will notice it when it comes to your bill too, which is another nice reason to do this. Swap to a new light bulb in every room and see what a difference it really does make to your eco-friendliness in the home.

Those are just some of the main ways to improve your homeโ€™s eco-efficiency, so make sure that you are thinking about these and doing all you can to get these right. That is going to make a huge difference all in all.
