Australian rock band Scandal Tree have released Twenty-O-Six, a new hard-rock track inspired by 1970s Detroit, America’s motor industry and a decidedly unusual dream.
The song is the fourth single from the Brisbane band’s album Never Look a Gift Foot in the Mouth.
1. Twenty-O-Six began with a strange dream about Detroit
Scandal Tree vocalist Huck says the idea for Twenty-O-Six came from what he describes as a semi-dream conversation with a Detroit auto worker living in 1976.
The mysterious character described his surroundings and spoke about a dipping bird given to him by his late son, providing the starting point for the song’s story.
2. The song imagines America 30 years into the future
Set in 1976, Twenty-O-Six follows a Detroit car worker imagining what America might look like three decades later in 2006.
Oil shortages, economic decline and social unrest form the backdrop, giving the track a darker theme about the relationship between American workers and the country they helped build.
3. It has a big, classic hard-rock sound
Running at 128 BPM, Twenty-O-Six has a driving rock rhythm built around interlocking guitar riffs, resonant guitar tones and a distinctive melody.
The band describes the track as packed with memorable lyrical hooks, giving it a sound that should appeal to fans of guitar-heavy classic and alternative rock.
4. The Twenty-O-Six video adds another layer to the story
Scandal Tree have also developed a reputation for producing distinctive music videos on relatively small budgets.
The Twenty-O-Six video finishes with a montage of US presidents from 1973 to 2006, reinforcing the song’s themes around American politics, industry and working people.
5. Twenty-O-Six is part of Scandal Tree’s latest album
Twenty-O-Six is taken from Scandal Tree’s album Never Look a Gift Foot in the Mouth, which is available through major streaming services, with a vinyl release also planned.
