Toronto based singer Tonia Evans has released a deeply personal version of Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill, using the song to reflect on divorce, betrayal and rebuilding her life.
1. The song took on a completely new meaning for her
Evans says the past few years brought the end of a 27 year relationship and a 23 year marriage. Rather than singing the song as a conversation between two lovers, she sees it as a conversation with her younger self.
2. She recorded it with just 24 hours’ notice
In January 2026, Evans was offered a one hour studio session and had only a day to choose and rehearse a song. She immediately chose Running Up That Hill, recording the main vocals in only a handful of takes.
3. She deliberately kept the performance raw
Evans is classically trained, but says this stage of her career is less about technical perfection and more about honesty. The recording keeps that vulnerability rather than trying to polish every edge.
4. There is a striking black and white video
The accompanying music video was created with director DIMMANTI and presents a visual conversation between Evans today and the younger version of herself. The black and white style was chosen to reflect the themes of truth and honesty.
5. It leads into a very personal new album
Running Up That Hill will feature on Evans’ forthcoming album Love Me Till I’m Me Again, alongside original songs including Bravery, Churchyard Roses and Thousand Cries, plus covers of songs by Coldplay, Live and others.
