Choosing A Levels for Medicine: 5 Things Students Need to Know

If you are thinking about studying medicine at university, choosing your A levels matters. Different medical schools have slightly different rules, so it is worth keeping as many options open as possible.

1. Chemistry and Biology is the safest starting point
If you want the widest possible choice of medical schools, Chemistry and Biology is the strongest combination. Some universities specifically require both.

2. Maths is a very useful third A level
A popular combination is Chemistry, Biology and Maths. It gives you a strong scientific background and keeps a large number of medical courses open.

3. Physics can work just as well
Chemistry, Biology and Physics is another excellent combination, especially if Physics is one of your stronger subjects.

4. You do not always need both Chemistry and Biology, but check carefully
Requirements vary between universities. Some medical schools may accept Chemistry with another science or Biology with another science, but this can reduce your choices.

5. Choose a third subject you are likely to do well in
Medicine offers are usually very demanding. Taking the hardest possible combination is not necessarily better if it lowers your grades. Three excellent A levels are more useful than stretching yourself too far.

A sensible combination if you are unsure

Chemistry + Biology + Maths is probably the safest all round choice.

Chemistry + Biology + Physics is equally strong if you prefer Physics.

The key message is simple: take Chemistry and Biology if you want to keep the greatest number of UK medical schools open to you, then choose a third A level that you enjoy and can achieve a high grade in.
