American Bar at The Savoy: 5 Things to Know Before You Go

The American Bar at The Savoy is not simply somewhere to stop for a cocktail. Opened in 1893, it is London’s longest-surviving cocktail bar and one of the most famous drinking rooms in the world.

It is also surprisingly easy to visit. You don’t need to be staying at The Savoy, you don’t need a dinner reservation and you certainly don’t need a tuxedo.

Here are five things worth knowing before you go.

1. Book ahead, especially if you want an evening table

The Savoy recommends reserving a table as early as possible because its bars can get very busy.

This matters particularly if you are planning a pre-theatre drink, a Saturday evening visit or celebrating something and don’t want to leave your evening to chance.

The bar opens at 12 noon every day, so an afternoon visit can be a good option if you want to see the room when it is a little calmer.

Our tip: early evening is a good compromise. It is lively enough to feel special without necessarily being at its busiest.

2. You don’t need to dress extremely formally

Walking into The Savoy for the first time can feel slightly intimidating, but the American Bar does not require a jacket and tie.

The hotel asks guests to dress in a comfortable but elegant way, although sports jerseys and supporter clothing are not permitted.

Think smart rather than formal. Smart jeans, trousers, a shirt, dress or similar outfit will fit comfortably with the surroundings.

That said, this is one London bar where dressing up a little can be part of the fun.

3. Don’t automatically order your usual drink

You could order a gin and tonic, but you would be missing part of the reason for visiting.

The American Bar has played an important part in cocktail history for more than a century. Famous bartenders associated with it include Ada “Coley” Coleman and Harry Craddock, author of The Savoy Cocktail Book.

The cocktail menu often draws inspiration from The Savoy’s long history.

If the menu feels slightly overwhelming, ask the bartender for a recommendation. Tell them whether you prefer something sweet, dry, refreshing, strong or spirit-led.

That conversation is part of the experience.

4. Expect luxury hotel prices

The American Bar is not somewhere to go for a cheap round of drinks.

Cocktails are priced at the level you would expect from one of London’s best-known luxury hotels, so it is sensible to look at the current menu before you visit.

However, you are paying for more than the drink itself. The bar dates back to 1893 and has welcomed generations of famous guests. There is also live music, which adds considerably to the atmosphere.

If you don’t want to spend an entire evening there, one carefully chosen cocktail can still make a memorable addition to a London night out.

5. It is an excellent pre-theatre or post-theatre stop

The Savoy is on the Strand, between Covent Garden and the Thames, making it particularly convenient for London’s West End.

Nearby theatres include the Savoy Theatre, Lyceum Theatre, Aldwych Theatre, Duchess Theatre, Novello Theatre and Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

Charing Cross, Embankment and Covent Garden stations are all within easy walking distance.

One useful detail for families is that the American Bar is generally aimed at adults and older teenagers. Non-resident visitors need to be at least 14, with those under 18 accompanied by an adult.
