As Christmas approaches, families looking for the perfect festive outing will find The Gruffalo’s Child by Tall Stories to be a heartwarming treat. Based on Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s beloved picture book, this enchanting production returns to the West End for the winter as part of its 28-venue UK tour. Below are five reasons this show continues to delight audiences year after year.
1. Discover a magical snowy adventure
Based on Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s award-winning picture book, The Gruffalo’s Child onstage follows this courageous and curious creature on a magical journey where wit triumphs over strength. She ignores her father’s warnings about the Big Bad Mouse and tiptoes out into the deep dark wood. Her sense of adventure leads her to encounter a fox, a snake and an owl, but the Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist… does he?
2. The magic of imagination means everyone is invited in
Tall Stories ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ transports the whole family, from ages 3 and beyond. By engaging all the audience directly right from the start, everyone is encouraged to be part of bringing to life the Gruffalo’s Child’s adventure onstage.

3. The Gruffalo’s Child is a family favourite, yet Tall Stories makes sure there are always new things to discover onstage
The show captures all the charm, rhyming couplets and playful humour of the picture book, and makes the live theatre experience even more magical with catchy original songs and a lot of laughs. Director Olivia Jacobs worked with the new cast, including Joe Lindley as the Gruffalo and Predators, Hannah Miller as the Gruffalo’s Child, Robin Harris as the Understudy and Sabrina Simohamed as the Narrator and Mouse, finding new ways for the show to feel exciting and fun thanks to their unique interpretations and fresh energy.
4. Tall Stories are experts in great storytelling
With 28 years of creating Olivier Award–nominated shows under its belt, the company is known for its fantastically physical storytelling, puppetry, playfulness, original music and humour, encouraging children to explore with their imaginations long after they leave the theatre.
5. Tickets start from £10
In partnership with producers Nimax, and there are Relaxed, BSL Interpreted and Audio Described Performances throughout the run in the West End, to improve access to theatre for everyone.
