5 Things to Know About the Highbury Barn Tavern’s £500k Reopening

North London’s beloved Highbury Barn Tavern is set to throw open its doors again on Thursday 17th July after a stunning £500,000 refurbishment. From a new chef to a menu full of local delights, here’s what you need to know about this iconic pub’s return.

1. A Historic Local Reimagined

The Highbury Barn Tavern has been part of the community since 1840, originally serving as an ale and cake house. The recent renovation carefully blends this rich history with fresh energy, featuring a completely redecorated interior, a brand-new back bar (while preserving the original bar front), and revamped outdoor seating perfect for summer drinks.

2. A New Culinary Star in the Kitchen

Foodies are in for a treat, as Head Chef Sara O’Neil joins the team. Previously sous chef at The Gatehouse in Highgate Village—one of Conde Nast’s Top 20 London pubs for food—Sara brings a wealth of experience and a creative touch to the Tavern’s new menu.

3. A Menu Rooted in Local Produce

Expect a menu packed with modern pub classics and some delicious nods to the Tavern’s Victorian dairy-house past. Ingredients come from local favourites like Godfreys butchers and La Fromagerie cheesemonger. Highlights include desserts such as vanilla set custard with poached apricots, and an impressive cheese selection.

4. Weekly Events to Keep You Coming Back

There’s plenty going on throughout the week to tempt locals and visitors alike. Mondays offer ‘Bring Your Own’ wine with 10% off bottles from Highbury Wines. Thursdays are Oyster Nights with seafood treats for just £1.50 each. Saturdays promise sports on the big screens alongside a match-day menu, while Sundays focus on hearty roasts—think slow-roast Suffolk leg of lamb or aged Hereford sirloin—followed by the ever-popular pub quiz at 7:30pm.

5. A Home for Families and Football Fans

Thanks to its prime spot near Highbury Fields and local schools, the Highbury Barn Tavern is perfect for relaxed family lunches or dinners. And on match days, Arsenal supporters will find the same buzzing pre- and post-game atmosphere they’ve always loved, with takeaway pints and all the action shown live on screen.

“Highbury Barn Tavern is one of the area’s most historic pubs, and we’re proud to be investing in its future. With a refreshed design, a food-led approach championing local producers, and a warm welcome for both families and football fans, we’re excited to open our doors again this July.”
– Chris Hill, Managing Director of Urban Pubs and Bars

The Highbury Barn Tavern will be open seven days a week, with a special reopening celebration planned for Friday 25th July. Whether you’re after great food, live sport, or simply a pint in a beautiful setting, this is one reopening you won’t want to miss.
