April Banbury: From MAFS Star to Bridal Designer – An Exclusive Q&A

We catch up with April Banbury — Married at First Sight UK star and former Ms Great Britain — as she celebrates the launch of her debut bridal collection.

What was it like creating your own MAFS gown in just 2 weeks?

Absolutely chaotic but honestly, I thrived on the madness! I was sketching, sourcing fabrics, and sewing non-stop, it was the most intense two weeks of my life. But there was no way I was walking down the aisle in anything other than a dress that felt completely “me.” That gown was a labour of love, and proof that a deadline and a dream can actually work wonders!

You have a background in bridal styling – so even before the show did you have an idea of what your ideal dress would look like?

Funnily enough, I actually had no idea what I wanted, being around wedding dresses 24/7 makes it harder, not easier! But I did know I wanted it to showcase my craftsmanship. I opted for delicate hand-beading and a detachable overskirt to give it that luxe, couture feel. I wanted something that felt totally unique to me, with a fun twist, the overskirt was a nod to my personality, bringing that playful element to an otherwise classic silhouette.

Did designing your own MAFS dress make you realise you wanted to launch your own bridal collection?

100%. That experience was the spark. I’d been designing for years, but creating that dress reminded me just how much I love bridal, the emotion, the artistry, the transformation. It gave me the confidence to stop waiting and finally bring my own collection to life. And now I get to help other brides feel just as incredible on their big day.

With your collection, how have you balanced bridal trends with your own inspiration?

I always say trends are fun to flirt with, but timelessness is the real love story. I keep an eye on what’s trending, of course, but I design from the heart. My inspiration always starts with how I want a bride to feel in the dress. It’s about balance: fresh silhouettes, luxe fabrics, a touch of fashion edge, but always wearable, always romantic.

What are the Top 3 things you would tell brides to consider before shopping for a dress?

  1. Be open-minded – so many brides end up falling for something completely different to what they imagined.
  2. Think about how you want to feel, not just how you want to look – confident, comfortable, beautiful… that’s the magic combo.
  3. Bring the right people – supportive, honest, and positive vibes only! It makes all the difference.
