Five Ways Music Will is Revolutionising Music Education in Schools

Music Will is a non-profit organisation dedicated to transforming music education in U.S. public schools. With over two decades of experience, they have impacted more than 1.8 million students across 6,000 schools nationwide. Here are five key aspects of Music Will’s mission and programmes:

1. Modern Band: A Fresh Approach to Music Education
Music Will introduced the “modern band” concept to schools, focusing on teaching students to play, perform, improvise, and compose using popular music genres like rock, pop, Latin, rap, R&B, and country. This student-centred approach empowers learners to start playing on day one, making music education more accessible and engaging.

2. Empowering Educators with Resources and Training
Recognising that many music educators lack access to resources and professional development, Music Will offers free virtual and in-person workshops, a diverse curriculum, and a supportive community. Registered teachers can also access discounts on instruments and apply for free instruments when funding is available.

3. Collaborations with Artists and Organisations
Music Will partners with renowned artists and organisations to expand its reach and impact. Notably, guitarist Tom Morello has collaborated with the organisation to provide musical instruments and training to schools, emphasising the transformative power of music education.

4. Annual Events and Professional Development
The organisation hosts events like the Modern Band Summit, offering educators up to 15 hours of professional development. These events provide opportunities for teachers to learn from professionals across the global modern band education community.

5. Opportunities to Support Music Education
Individuals and organisations can support Music Will’s mission through donations, partnerships, and advocacy. Every donation made before June 30 will be matched pound for pound, thanks to a challenge grant from The Wildflower Foundation.

Music Will’s commitment to inclusive, student-centred music education continues to make a significant impact in schools across the country. To learn more or get involved, visit their official website: musicwill.org.
