A Review of ‘Sunset Boulevard’ at the Savoy Theatre

We recently saw “Sunset Boulevard” at the Savoy Theatre, and it was an unforgettable experience. Nicole Scherzinger’s performance as Norma Desmond was particularly impressive. Her portrayal brought a unique blend of vulnerability and commanding presence to the character, making Norma deeply sympathetic. Her emotional depth in songs like “Surrender” and “As If We Never Said Goodbye” was captivating.

Jamie Lloyd’s direction is a highlight of this production. His modern and innovative approach, characterized by a stark and minimalist design, beautifully reflects the black-and-white era of Norma’s film career. The use of a large screen as a backdrop, projecting live action footage, adds a dramatic layer to the storytelling, enhancing the meta-commentary on Norma’s relationship with the camera and her longing for fame.

Tom Francis, as the screenwriter Joe Gillis, delivers a charismatic performance. His vocal strength and dynamic with Grace Hodgett Young, who plays Betty, are notable. Their chemistry, especially in their duets, adds depth to the narrative.

The choreography by Fabian Aloise is another remarkable aspect of the production. The dance number featuring Desmond and her younger self, portrayed by Hannah Yun Chamberlain, was both energetic and emotive, highlighting the internal conflict of the character.

The technical precision of the production also deserves mention. The use of RF microphones and the seamless relay of live action to the screen without any noticeable delay was impressive. It shows the skill and attention to detail of the technical team behind the scenes.

Overall, “Sunset Boulevard” at the Savoy Theatre is a must-see. It is a production that successfully combines the tragic grandeur of the musical with modern sensibilities to create a memorable theatre experience.
