To commemorate the remarkable 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush’s arrival in the UK, we are thrilled to announce the highly anticipated Windrush photography exhibition at the iconic St John’s Smith Square. This captivating showcase, curated by award-winning social documentary photographer Jim Grover, offers a compelling visual narrative titled “Windrush: Portrait of a Generation.” Join us as we delve into the rich cultural heritage, untold stories, and vibrant lives of the Caribbean migrants who shaped the South London community. This free exhibition, marking a significant milestone in history, will be open for public viewing from Thursday 1st to Friday 30th June.

Jim Grover, an acclaimed photographer known for his genuine passion for capturing the essence of people and their communities, embarked on a profound journey that resulted in the remarkable Windrush: Portrait of a Generation series. What began as a humble invitation to play dominoes with the local community evolved into a deeply moving exploration of the lives and traditions of first-generation Caribbean migrants in South London. Grover’s dedication to documenting their daily experiences over the course of a year has resulted in an exhibition that shines a light on the vibrant culture and resilient spirit of this proud community.

With the Windrush generation now in their late 60s to 90s, this exhibition serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of documenting their stories and traditions before they become lost to time. Through Grover’s lens, visitors will witness the enduring legacy of Caribbean migrants in Brixton and Clapham, as their vibrant lives are beautifully immortalized in photographs that capture both the joy and challenges they have faced. Originally exhibited at the renowned Oxo Gallery in London in May 2018, Windrush: Portrait of a Generation received accolades for its emotional depth and intimate portrayal of a community’s collective journey (The Observer).
