Beware the Ides of March, especially in Hoxton. Sleepwalk Immersive, the company behind the sold-out Bacchanalia, is bringing CAESAR to Hoxton Hall, and tickets are on sale now. Here are five things to know.
1. Shakespeare in 1940s Chinatown
This bold reimagining of Julius Caesar moves the story to the shadowy criminal underworld of 1940s Chinatown. Caesar has returned victorious, but his greatest threat may come from those closest to him. As a lavish celebration unfolds, whispers of betrayal grow louder, loyalties fracture and a chilling prophecy sets a deadly conspiracy in motion. Drawing on both history and Shakespeare, it’s a fresh, atmospheric take on one of the most famous stories ever told.
2. Four floors to explore
The action spans four floors of Hoxton Hall, a Grade II* listed Victorian music hall built in 1863. Rather than watching from a seat, you’re free to roam through a richly imagined underworld and encounter characters at close quarters. The historic building, with its galleries and hidden corners, is the perfect setting for a story full of secrets. It feels like stumbling into a world that exists beyond the stage.
3. Choose your own path
You decide who to follow, where to go and which secrets to uncover. Stick with the conspirators, stay close to Caesar, or slip between worlds to piece the story together from different perspectives. There’s no single path, so no two visits are the same, which makes it tempting to go back again. If you like, you can get involved in the action, or simply watch the drama unfold from the sidelines.
4. From the team behind Bacchanalia
Sleepwalk Immersive was founded in 2022 by Sebastian Huang, and puts audience experience at the heart of everything it does. Its debut, Bacchanalia, began as a one-man show, then had two sold-out runs, earned five-star reviews and was named one of The Stage’s Top 50 UK Shows of 2023. Audiences went back again and again. Expectations are high for this follow-up.
5. Only four weeks
CAESAR is a limited four-week run, and immersive shows like this tend to have tight capacity. Given how quickly Bacchanalia sold out, it’s worth booking early. It would also make a great Christmas present for a theatre-loving friend, giving them something exciting to look forward to in the new year. You can sign up to the Friends of Sleepwalk scheme for extra benefits too.
