Days Out | Dudley, about 30 minutes from Birmingham
Fans of Peaky Blinders may recognise it, but the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley is a brilliant day out for families too. This award-winning open-air museum tells the story of one of the very first industrialised landscapes in Britain. Here are five reasons to visit.
1. Step back in time
Spread across 26 acres, you can explore more than 40 carefully reconstructed shops, houses and industrial areas. You’ll hear the clang of hammers and smell the smoke from red-brick chimneys as you wander the cobbled streets, and it’s a fantastic way for children to understand what life was like in the past.
2. Meet the historic characters
Costumed characters bring the streets to life, sharing stories of what it was really like to live and work during this revolutionary period. Kids can pop into the old school, visit period homes and chat to the residents.
3. Go down the mine
One of the most memorable experiences is heading underground into the museum’s mine, where you’ll discover the dark, cramped conditions miners faced. It’s atmospheric and eye-opening, especially for older children.
4. Fish and chips like it used to be
The museum’s traditional fish and chip shop, cooked the old-fashioned way, is famous in its own right and often has a queue. Don’t leave without trying them, and you might find old-fashioned sweets nearby too.
5. Seasonal events throughout the year
The museum runs a programme of special events, from murder mystery evenings to Glad Tidings, a festive evening event on selected dates from 11 to 23 December 2026, with carollers, open fires and costumed characters. It has also hosted Halloween evenings in past years, so check the website for the latest events before you visit.
