Forty paintings explore Renoir’s sunny vision of romance and modern life in the 1870s and 80s. He divides opinion, so here are five reasons to go and make up your own mind.
1. The landscapes are glorious
The riverside views of the Seine at Chatou are the real stars. Head straight for them if you’re short on time.
2. The Promenade
This woodland scene of a couple on a path has a lovely, teasing ambiguity. We could have stood in front of it for ages.
3. Impressionism at its most spontaneous
Look out for the quick oil sketch of Monet’s wife and son, painted alongside his friend. It’s a joyful glimpse of the movement in action.
4. A debate starter
Some of his idealised women can feel a little sugary, and The Arts Desk gave the show three stars. That makes it a great one to argue about over lunch.
5. Pair it with a free display
From 15 October, the free one-room show Yinka Shonibare and Thomas Gainsborough: A Conversation is on at the National Gallery too, so make an afternoon of it.
