5 Reasons to See King Lear at the Royal Exchange, From £12

Manchester Theatre | 2 October – 15 November 2026

David Threlfall takes on Shakespeare’s mightiest role in Matthew Dunster’s bold production at Manchester’s Royal Exchange. Here are five reasons to see it in the round.

1. David Threlfall is a brilliant Lear

Threlfall’s raging, raw king is the heart of the show. Seeing him this close up is unforgettable.

2. A superb Gloucester and sons

Jonathan Slinger’s Gloucester, Paddy Stafford’s Edmund and Tom Varey’s Edgar are all excellent, with Jason Done a steady Kent.

3. A daring take on the play

Dunster cuts the Fool as a character, turning him into Lear’s inner voice instead. Purists may balk, but it makes for a fresh night out.

4. Theatre in the round

The Royal Exchange is one of the most thrilling spaces in the country. Our tip: Anna Fleischle’s hanging chains can block some views, so choose your seat carefully.

5. Tickets from just £12

That’s a bargain for a star-led Shakespeare. Allow around three hours, including one interval.
