Get’cha head in the game! Disney’s High School Musical transfers to Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre from 12 October, after a hit summer run at Lowry in Salford, and a first-look trailer has just been released. Here are five reasons to book.
1. It’s the film’s 20th anniversary
Two decades after the Disney Channel film became a global phenomenon, this stage version celebrates the story of basketball star Troy and brainy newcomer Gabriella, who risk everything by auditioning for the school musical. It’s a great dose of nostalgia for millennials, and a first taste of East High for a new generation.
2. A Disney icon is back
KayCee Stroh, who played Martha Cox in the original films, returns to East High as drama teacher Ms Darbus. It’s a lovely full-circle moment for fans who grew up with the films.
3. McFly’s Harry Judd as Coach Bolton
McFly drummer and Strictly Come Dancing champion Harry Judd plays Coach Bolton. He’s joined by Tobias Turley as Troy, Leonor Correia as Gabriella, Caitlin Tipping as Sharpay and Luke Bayer as Ryan.
4. All the songs you know
Expect all the big numbers, including “Breaking Free”, “We’re All In This Together”, “Get’cha Head in the Game” and “Stick to the Status Quo”, with choreography by Aaron Renfree. It’s directed by Hope Mill Theatre founders Joseph Houston and William Whelton.
5. Perfect for half term and Christmas
Running through to 3 January, it’s ideal for October half term, the Christmas holidays or a festive family treat. Wembley Park is easy to reach on the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines.
