One of the north’s best winter weekends is coming back. The York Ice Trail returns on 6 and 7 February 2027 with a brand-new theme, Legends Unleashed, and it’s free for everyone.
Here are five things to know.
1. Legends brought to life in ice
This year’s theme brings legendary stories and characters to life through a spectacular collection of ice sculptures across York. Each one is inspired by history and folklore, and each tells its own story, inviting you to discover more as you explore. In a city as steeped in legend as York, with its Viking past and famous ghost stories, it’s a perfect fit.
2. Carved by the experts
The sculptures are created by Icebox, the UK and Europe’s leading ice sculpture specialist, and curated by Make It York and its partners. Expect beautifully detailed pieces that sparkle in the winter light, and try to visit early before the sculptures start to melt.
3. Free and family-friendly
The trail is completely free, making it a brilliant day out for families, especially during the quieter winter months. Children love hunting for each sculpture, and it’s a fun, easy way to see the city’s historic streets and snickelways.
4. Pick up a trail map
Trail maps will be available from 1 February online and from the Visit York Visitor Information Centre at 28 Back Swinegate, where the team can help you make the most of your visit. Organisers have also teased new experiences for 2027, so keep an eye on Visit York for announcements.
5. Make a weekend of it
The trail runs from 10.30am to 4pm on both days, and York’s cafés, restaurants, shops and attractions offer plenty of places to warm up between sculptures. York is under two hours from London King’s Cross by train, so it’s easy to turn into a winter weekend break.
