London Music and Film | Wednesday 20 October 2027
Baz Luhrmann’s William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, turns 30. To celebrate, the film is heading out on a world tour as a live-to-film concert, with a UK run in October 2027 that includes the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith.
Here are five things to know.
1. Not your usual film concert
The full film is screened with the original dialogue intact, while a hybrid ensemble performs the music live. Instead of just an orchestra, you’ll get rock and orchestral musicians alongside singers, electronics and a DJ, matching Luhrmann’s famous mix of the classic and the contemporary.
2. That 90s soundtrack
The film’s music helped define a generation. Expect to hear “Kissing You” by Des’ree, “Lovefool” by The Cardigans, “#1 Crush” by Garbage, “Talk Show Host” by Radiohead, “Young Hearts Run Free” and “Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)”.
3. Baz Luhrmann is on board
The director is involved with the tour and says one of the biggest surprises of the past 30 years has been watching the film find new audiences again and again. The concert, he says, is a new way to experience its emotion, music and theatricality.
4. A film that made Shakespeare cool
Released in November 1996, it opened at number one at the US box office and turned Shakespeare’s tragedy into a bold, MTV-era pop opera. Its style still shows up in fashion and music today.
5. Six UK dates in October 2027
The world tour premieres at the Sydney Opera House before heading to the UK:
- 17 Oct: Edinburgh Usher Hall
- 18 Oct: Glasgow Royal Concert Hall
- 20 Oct: London Eventim Apollo
- 21 Oct: York Barbican
- 22 Oct: Birmingham Symphony Hall
- 23 Oct: Manchester O2 Apollo
