5 Reasons to Book The Wind in the Willows at the Rose Theatre, Kingston This Christmas

Christmas 2026 | 25 November 2026 – 3 January 2027

Poop-poop! The Rose Theatre in Kingston upon Thames has announced the cast for its Christmas show, a brand-new, world premiere adaptation of The Wind in the Willows. Based on Kenneth Grahame’s much-loved novel, it runs from 25 November to 3 January and promises a colourful, joyous festive adventure full of laughter, music and song.

Here are five reasons to book.

1. A brand-new take on a timeless classic

This isn’t a revival. It’s a completely new adaptation written by Rob Evans, with music by John Biddle, so even families who know the story well will find something fresh. The Rose’s artistic director, Christopher Haydon, describes Evans’ version as absolutely gorgeous, witty, exciting and fantastically festive. At its heart is a message that feels perfect for Christmas: there’s nothing stronger than friendship, family and standing by the ones we love.

2. Meet Toad, Ratty, Mole and Badger

The much-loved characters are brought to life by a talented professional cast. Julian Holt plays the irrepressible, motor-car-mad Toad, with Kingdom Sibanda as Ratty, James Pedley-Holden as Mole and Tori Burgess as the wise old Badger. Charlotte Mills plays the Chief Weasel, who leads the villainous Wild Wooders in their plot to take over Toad Hall.

3. The Rose Youth Theatre joins the cast

As with every Rose Christmas show, the professional actors share the stage with the celebrated Rose Youth Theatre. It gives the production a big, lively company and a real sense of local pride, and young audience members love seeing performers not much older than themselves up on stage.

4. From the director of last year’s Cinderella

The show is directed by Owen Horsley, who returns to the Rose after his acclaimed Cinderella last Christmas. If you enjoyed that, you’ll know the Rose knows how to put on a festive family treat, and Haydon says he’s in no doubt the cast will bring seasonal joy to every family who comes through the doors.

5. A proper Christmas day out in Kingston

With morning, afternoon and evening performances throughout December, plus an audio-described show on 21 December, it’s easy to find a time that suits your family. Combine it with Christmas shopping in Kingston town centre or a wintry walk along the Thames, which feels very fitting for a trip to the River Bank. Previews start on 25 November, and tickets for the whole run are on sale now.
