Twenty-five years after it first hit cinemas, Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is returning as a huge live arena event. The full film is shown on a giant screen while an orchestra and choir perform Howard Shore’s Oscar-winning score live, and London’s show at The O2 will be the biggest yet.
Here are five things to know.
1. It’s the biggest UK staging ever
The London performances will be the largest version of The Fellowship of the Ring in Concert ever presented in the UK. There are matinee and evening shows, so you can choose whichever suits you best.
2. 239 musicians and a 60ft screen
The film plays on a 60ft HD screen, with 239 musicians and singers performing in perfect sync. In London that means the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, the Crouch End Festival Chorus and Trinity Boys Choir, taking you from the Shire to the depths of Moria.
3. The conductor who started it all
London’s performances are conducted by Ludwig Wicki, who led the world’s first-ever Lord of the Rings live concert back in 2008. Soprano Kaitlyn Lusk is the vocal soloist.
4. One of the best-loved film scores ever
Howard Shore’s music won the Academy Award and has topped Classic FM’s Movie Music Hall of Fame for three years running. Hearing it live, with a full choir, is a very different experience from the cinema.
5. The perfect Christmas outing
Frodo, Gandalf, and the one ring to rule them all: for many people, this film was a huge shared cinema moment in 2001. At the end of November, it makes a brilliant early Christmas treat for fans old and new. The tour also visits Dublin, Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham.
