For families in Surrey, Guildford High School is one of the best-known girls’ schools around. Here are five things to know.
1. It was progressive from the start
Guildford High was founded in 1888 by the Church Schools Company. At a time when some girls’ schools mainly trained future governesses, it set out to give girls an education to match the reformed public schools for boys. Its London Road building, completed in 1893, is still in use today, and the school’s motto is “As one that serveth”.
2. Girls can stay from 4 to 18 on one site
The junior school, senior school and sixth form all share one campus, with around 1,000 girls from Guildford and the surrounding towns and villages. The school sits next to London Road station, making it easy to reach by train.
3. Academic results are exceptional
The school’s aim is a first-class education for academically able girls, and the results show it: in 2025, 97.3% of A-level grades were A* to B and 96.7% of GCSE grades were 9 to 7. That sits alongside a strong pastoral care programme built around kindness and happiness.
4. It has its own sports centre
Separate from the main campus, the sports centre includes an indoor swimming pool, gym, sports hall and fitness suite. Music and drama are strong too, with music scholarships available for talented instrumentalists.

Guildford High belongs to the United Church Schools Trust, part of United Learning. Most girls join the senior school at 11+, with around 100 places in Year 7, and there’s also a sixth-form entry point. Academic and music scholarships and means-tested bursaries are available, and the school runs regular visitor mornings.
