5 Reasons to Try The Crazy Goose, Brighton’s First Dedicated Charcoal Rotisserie

Brighton Food & Drink | Birds & Bubbles runs 12 – 25 October 2026

Fifteen years after The Coal Shed first fired up its grill at 8 Boyce’s Street, the same building is starting a new chapter. The Crazy Goose is relaunching as Brighton’s first dedicated charcoal rotisserie, with a menu built around one hero dish: whole chickens marinated for 48 hours and turned slowly over open coals.

Here are five reasons to book a table.

1. The Crazy Chicken

The star of the show is the signature Crazy Chicken, served with burnt guindilla chillies and garlic toum. The long marinade soaks in the flavour, and the charcoal gives it a deep smokiness and crisp, charred skin. Order a half bird for £20 or a whole bird to share for £40. If you want the full works with flatbread, house pickles, toum and fries, it’s £29 for a half and £58 for a whole.

2. Birds & Bubbles for OctoberBEST

The rotisserie makes its debut during OctoberBEST, Brighton’s month-long celebration of its restaurants. The limited-edition Birds & Bubbles sharing menu costs £30 per person (minimum two) and runs on weekdays from 12 to 25 October, between 12pm and 5pm.

You start with house pickles, flatbread with sesame brown butter, and black chickpea hummus with caramelised miso onions. Then a whole Crazy Chicken arrives with padrón peppers, crispy potatoes with aji verde, charred hispi cabbage with pistachio dukkah and an autumn tomato salad with chilli crunch. Blackberry, bay leaf and meringue soft serve rounds it off. Add a three-glass Bubbles Flight of English rosé brut, Cava and Moscato d’Asti for £30.

3. Plenty beyond the bird

The wider menu is made for sharing. There’s whipped feta with Persian pistachios and chilli oil, skewers, kofta and wood-fired halloumi, and sides like charred tenderstem with whipped tahini and fries dusted with chicken salt. From Friday to Sunday you can also order a pomegranate-glazed rotisserie lamb shoulder for two (£60), and there are set sharing menus at £27.50 and £37.50 per person.

4. A Sunday roast with a difference

On Sundays the rotisserie turns to roast dinners. Choose a whole or half Crazy Chicken, rotisserie lamb shoulder or a vegan roast cauliflower steak, all with crispy smashed potatoes, seasonal veg and roasting-tray gravy. There’s a kids’ roast too, which makes it a good pick for families.

5. From the team behind The Coal Shed

The Crazy Goose is part of Black Rock Restaurants, the independent group founded by Brighton restaurateur Razak Helalat. Its award-winning portfolio includes The Coal Shed in Brighton and London, The Salt Room, Burnt Orange and Tutto. After fifteen years of cooking over fire, the team has put all that know-how into chicken, and it’s a great excuse for a day trip to Brighton this autumn.
