Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House has been a bestselling novel, a classic horror film and a hit Netflix series. Now it’s a play. This brand-new stage adaptation opened at Salisbury Playhouse in September and arrives at Richmond Theatre from Tuesday 6 to Saturday 10 October, just in time for spooky season.
Here are five reasons to book.
1. A true classic of the ghost story
Stephen King called Jackson’s novel “near perfect”, and it’s widely seen as one of the greatest works of supernatural fiction. The story follows a group of investigators who move into the mysterious Hill House looking for answers, only for their experiments to plunge into darkness as strange things start happening in its twisting corridors.
2. A world premiere from an award-winning writer
The adaptation is by Olivier and BAFTA Award winner Stef Smith, and it’s directed by Sky Arts Award winner Martin Constantine. This is the first time this version has been staged anywhere, and Richmond is its only London stop.
3. A strong cast
Clancy Ryan plays Eleanor, with Sophie Lenglinger as Theo, Robin Morrissey as Luke and Jasper Britton as Dr Montague. Jemma Churchill plays Mrs Montague and Sian Howard is the unsettling housekeeper Mrs Dudley.
4. Stage illusions and scares
The production has a full creative team built to unsettle you, including video design by Duncan McLean and illusion design by Will Houstoun, alongside Ti Green’s set, Chris Davey’s lighting and Johnny Edwards’ sound. Expect a show that’s tense, creepy and a little bit playful, and one that leaves you wondering whether the house is haunted or the people in it are.
5. The perfect start to Halloween season
Early October is the ideal time for a proper ghost story, and Richmond Theatre’s beautiful Victorian auditorium adds to the atmosphere. If you can’t make it, the tour continues to Theatr Clwyd, Brighton, Manchester, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Cambridge until 21 November.
