Serpentine South in Kensington Gardens is presenting Change Ringing, the first UK institutional exhibition by Tokyo-born artist Justin Caguiat. It brings together painting, sculpture, printmaking, sound and film, and runs from 8 October 2026 to 10 January 2027.
Here are five reasons to go.
1. Paintings that change colour in front of you
Caguiat uses heat-responsive pigment, so his works shift in colour and reveal different shapes as the temperature and light change. No two visits will look quite the same. The paintings are reminiscent of fresco painting but don’t tell a fixed story.
2. Bronze bells shaped like flowers and seeds
The show includes a series of bronze bells cast in the shapes of flowers and plant seeds. A score by Lily Pickett, inspired by English change ringing, plays them mechanically in a continuous loop, and the gallery walls gather and amplify the chimes, turning the building into a listening instrument.
3. Art that reacts to the bells
A new site-specific installation features paintings on copper, wired to small heating pads that are triggered by the bells. When the bells ring, the copper warms up and the colours and forms shift. It’s a clever mix of art, sound and technology.
4. Monumental paintings and a hidden cinema
Throughout the galleries you’ll find huge paintings that feel like murals or sweeping landscapes. A rarely used room at the back of the gallery has been turned into a small cinema showing a 16mm film by the artist.
5. It’s free, in one of London’s loveliest parks
Like all Serpentine exhibitions, Change Ringing is free to visit. Combine it with an autumn walk through Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. The show is curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Natalia Grabowska, with Alexa Chow.
