Ixchel, the modern Mexican restaurant and tequila bar on the King’s Road, has turned its lower ground floor into a gallery. Interwoven celebrates contemporary Mexican female artists as part of the second Chelsea Arts Festival, and it’s on until 16 October.
Here are five reasons to go.
1. Six exciting Mexican artists
The show brings together work by Alicia Paz, Ana Benavides, Andrea Segura, Paola Estrella, Regina Torres and Rita Fernández. Across painting, ceramics and textiles, it explores the many faces of contemporary Mexican womanhood.
2. Inspired by a Maya goddess
The restaurant is named after Ixchel, the Maya goddess of the moon who is closely linked with weaving. The exhibition takes that idea of bringing separate threads together and applies it to art, weaving different artists and styles into one collective show.
3. Beautiful textiles
Latin American talent house Casa Agape joins the exhibition, with textile works by Caralarga and Onora woven throughout the space. They add another layer to the show’s exploration of craft and Mexican identity.
4. Art with tacos and tequila
This isn’t a quiet white-walled gallery. The art is displayed in a relaxed restaurant built around gathering and conversation, so you can pair your visit with ceviches, tacos and tostadas upstairs. Ixchel’s hidden tequila bar is known for its huge collection of tequilas and mezcals.
5. Take a piece home
All of the works in Interwoven are for sale, so it’s a great chance to discover and collect new talent. The exhibition is curated by Valeria Nikitina with Ixchel and Art Circles, and there are special events planned throughout the run.
