For five decades, the 606 Club in Chelsea has been one of London’s best-loved live music venues, presenting the finest jazz, soul, Latin, groove, R&B and blues musicians in the UK. To mark its 50th anniversary, the club is hosting a 14-day festival from Monday 12 to Sunday 25 October, with more than 50 artists, many of them longtime friends of the club.
Here are five reasons to go.
1. Jamie Cullum returns to where it started
On Tuesday 13 October, Jamie Cullum comes back to the club where he played his first trio gig in June 2002. He’s since sold more than 10 million albums worldwide, and it was Jamie himself who asked to be part of the celebrations.
2. A who’s who of British jazz
The line-up reads like a history of the UK scene. Gary Crosby, Denys Baptiste and Tony Kofi open the festival, pianist Gwilym Simcock plays with Quentin Collins, Brandon Allen and special guest Kyle Eastwood, and Julian Joseph shares a night with Soweto Kinch and Iain Ballamy. Tim Garland, Jason Rebello and the Stacey Brothers take over on 22 October.
3. “Guitarmageddon”
On Wednesday 14 October, four brilliant guitarists share the stage: Jim Mullen, Nigel Price, Rob Luft and John Parricelli. The club has nicknamed it “Guitarmageddon”, and it promises to be one of the highlights of the fortnight.
4. Soul, groove and family-friendly Sunday lunches
It isn’t all jazz. Former Average White Band singer Hamish Stuart joins Tony O’Malley on 19 October, and soul singers Lex Cameron, Beverley Skeete and Mary Pearce take over on 23 October. Sunday lunch sessions, which welcome children, feature Earl Okin and Rachel Sutton on 18 October and rising star Louise Balkwill on 25 October.
5. A party finale
The festival finishes on Sunday 25 October with an evening packed with friends of the club: Polly Gibbons, Claire Martin, Ian Shaw, Imaani and Wayne Hernandez, plus the club’s “NYE” horns with Tim Whitehead, Mornington Lockett and owner Steve Rubie. Come ready to celebrate, and maybe dance.

The rest of October’s programme includes Soft Machine guitarist John Etheridge on 1 October and saxophonist Binker Golding on 3 October. The 606 is also part of the EFG London Jazz Festival in November.
