Three Men in a Boat comes to the Rose Theatre Kingston from 18 September to 10 October 2026, bringing Jerome K. Jerome’s much-loved Thames adventure back to the place where its journey begins. This new stage version promises friendship, physical comedy, original songs and a spectacularly unsuccessful boating holiday.
1. It is a brand-new version of Three Men in a Boat
This is a world premiere, rather than a revival of an existing stage production. Playwright Al Smith has adapted Jerome K. Jerome’s classic novel for the Rose Theatre, with Christopher Haydon directing.
2. The story starts right here in Kingston
There could hardly be a better theatre for it. Jerome, George and Harris set off on their supposedly relaxing journey up the River Thames from Kingston towards Oxford. Predictably, things do not go according to plan, with bad weather, troublesome dogs, questionable cheese and angry swans all getting involved.
3. The cast includes some familiar faces
Jonny Weldon plays Jerome, with Bronté Barbé as Harris, Richard David-Caine as George and Calum Donald-Bruce as Montmorency the dog. The production combines the story’s verbal humour with plenty of physical comedy.
4. There are original songs too
This is not simply three men sitting in a boat talking. Grant Olding, the Tony-nominated composer behind One Man, Two Guvnors, has written original songs for the production, while John Nicholson is responsible for movement and comedy.
5. Three Men in a Boat runs for just over three weeks
Three Men in a Boat is at the Rose Theatre Kingston from Friday 18 September until Saturday 10 October 2026. The running time is approximately 2 hours 20 minutes including an interval, with age guidance of 12+. Relaxed, captioned and audio-described performances are also scheduled during the run.
