Maureen Lipman in Right before I go at Soho Theatre: 5 things to know about the powerful London play

Maureen Lipman will appear in Right before I go at Soho Theatre in London for three performances on 5, 9 and 10 September 2026. Written by The Golden Girls and Gilmore Girls writer Stan Zimmerman, this thought-provoking play confronts suicide, grief and the importance of starting difficult conversations.

1. Maureen Lipman leads an impressive cast

The award-winning star of Educating Rita and Agony joins Iz Hesketh, Dominique Moore, Claire-Marie Hall, Emrhys Cooper, Gerard McCarthy, Paul Bigley, Tosh Wanogho-Maud and writer Stan Zimmerman.

Zimmerman described Lipman’s involvement as especially meaningful because watching her in Agony helped inspire him as a young comedy writer.

2. Right before I go brings its acclaimed Edinburgh production to London

The Soho Theatre performances follow the play’s successful appearance at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Previous productions in the United States have featured actors including Vanessa Williams, Olly Alexander, Christine Taylor and Patrick Page.

Its short London run is directed by Abigail Morris, the former artistic director of Soho Theatre Company.

3. The play shares real stories connected to suicide

Right before I go uses real suicide notes and personal accounts to explore the experiences of celebrities, veterans, bullied teenagers, LGBTQ+ people and those who have survived suicide attempts.

Zimmerman created the play after losing his friend Kevin Gill to suicide. His aim is to challenge the shame surrounding the subject and encourage more open conversations about mental health.

4. Every Soho Theatre performance includes a live discussion

The play runs for approximately 60 minutes and is followed by a 30-minute talkback. Members of the cast, audience and a local mental health professional will discuss the themes raised during the performance.

This makes Right before I go more than a conventional theatre production. It creates a space in which audiences can listen, reflect and talk about an issue that is too often left unspoken.

5. The final show takes place on World Suicide Prevention Day

The London performances are at 2.30pm on 5, 9 and 10 September 2026. The final show coincides with World Suicide Prevention Day.

Right before I go is at Soho Theatre, 21 Dean Street, London W1D 3NE. The age guidance is 14 and over.
