Freddie Mercury at the V&A: 5 Things to Know About Splendid Things in London

Freddie Mercury | Splendid Things is coming to the V&A South Kensington from 24 October 2026 to 17 January 2027. The free London display will bring together eight memorable Freddie Mercury looks from across his career, spread throughout the museum’s galleries.

1. Eight Freddie Mercury Looks Will Be on Display

The V&A will display eight outfits and looks worn by Freddie Mercury, covering his career from the early 1970s through to his later solo work.

2. See Costumes from Queen’s Most Famous Years

Highlights include the dramatic Mercury Wing catsuit, associated with Queen’s A Night at the Opera era and Bohemian Rhapsody, alongside the crown and cloak worn during Queen’s 1986 Magic Tour.

3. The Exhibition Is a Free Trail Around the V&A

Rather than sitting inside one exhibition gallery, Freddie Mercury | Splendid Things will have six stops around V&A South Kensington. Each costume will be placed within a setting designed to connect with the museum’s art, fashion and design collections.

4. Mary Austin Is Lending Seven of the Looks

Seven of the eight looks are being lent by Mary Austin, Freddie Mercury’s former fiancée and lifelong friend. The display forms part of celebrations marking what would have been Mercury’s 80th birthday year.

5. You Can Visit from October 2026

Dates: 24 October 2026 – 17 January 2027
Location: V&A South Kensington, London
Price: Free
More information: Visit the V&A website

For Queen fans, fashion lovers and anyone looking for a free exhibition in London this autumn, this should be one of the most interesting V&A displays of late 2026.
