Botswana Safari News: 5 New Ways to Experience Wilderness Mombo

For the first time since opening in 1991, Wilderness Mombo in Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve is expanding beyond traditional daytime game drives. High water levels and changes to local restrictions mean guests can now explore Chief’s Island after dark and from the water.

1. Night Drives Are Now Available

Guests can experience Chief’s Island after sunset for the first time, with the chance to spot nocturnal wildlife including genets, civets, springhares, lions and hyenas.

2. Take a Safari by Boat

A new six-seater boat operates from Kubu Jetty, offering a slower afternoon safari through the newly reconnected waterways, with snacks and refreshments included.

3. Explore by Traditional Mokoro

Guests can also travel through the channels in a mokoro, a traditional-style canoe poled by an experienced guide.

4. Wildlife Remains the Main Attraction

Chief’s Island is known for exceptionally high concentrations of predators and prey, making it one of Botswana’s best-known safari areas.

5. The New Experiences Are Seasonal

Boating, mokoro trips and other activities depend on water levels, weather and operating conditions, so availability may change throughout the year.
