Showstopper! The Improvised Musical is heading around the UK again, with new dates stretching into 2027 as well as further West End performances at London’s Cambridge Theatre. The Olivier Award-winning show is unusual for one very simple reason: nobody, including the performers, knows exactly what musical they are about to perform.

Here are five things to know.

1. Every performance is completely different

There is no fixed story. Instead, the audience suggests settings, musical styles and even a title, and the cast creates an entirely new musical on the spot.

One evening could be inspired by Stephen Sondheim, another by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the story could take place anywhere from Ancient Egypt to a primary school or even a mattress shop. That means you could see the show several times and never get the same production twice.

2. It has become a genuine West End success

Showstopper! was the first long-form improvised show to secure a full West End residency and won the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment and Family in 2016. The production has now created more than 1,400 new musicals since the company began in 2008.
Its current Cambridge Theatre run has been extended through to December 2026, marking another year in the West End.

3. There are plenty of opportunities to catch it around the UK

The tour continues through the autumn of 2026 before returning for further dates in 2027.

Stops include Hereford, Harrogate, Doncaster, Ipswich, Southampton, Manchester, Oxford, Bristol, Lichfield, Coventry, Bury St Edmunds and Jersey. There are also special children’s performances planned in Bristol, Coventry and Jersey.

West End performances at the Cambridge Theatre are scheduled for 12 October, 23 November and 21 December 2026.

4. The cast has serious musical theatre and comedy credentials

The company brings together performers with experience across the West End, television, radio and improv.

The line-up includes Ruth Bratt, Pippa Evans, Matt Cavendish, Miracle Chance, Susan Harrison, Martha Pothan, Ethan Pascal Peters and Joshua C. Jackson. Co-founder Adam Meggido also directed Peter Pan Goes Wrong, while other members of the company have appeared in productions including The Witches, Heathers, MJ The Musical and The Play That Goes Wrong.

The skill is not simply being funny. The performers have to act, sing, create characters and construct a coherent musical while responding instantly to suggestions from the audience.

5. It is a show built for people who like something unpredictable

A lot of theatre is about knowing roughly what you are going to see. Showstopper! works the other way around.

The audience helps shape the performance, the cast takes the risk, and by the end of the evening a musical has been created that will never be performed in exactly the same way again.

That makes it particularly interesting for musical theatre fans who have seen plenty of traditional shows and fancy something genuinely different.

The extended UK tour runs through 2026 and into May 2027, alongside further performances in London’s West End.
