Otto and Astrid are bringing their latest musical comedy show, The Stages Tour, to Soho Theatre for two nights before heading to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The Berlin-based sibling duo have spent more than 20 years combining live music, comedy, arguments and exaggerated rock-star ambition. Here are five things to know before booking.

1. It is a comedy show disguised as a rock concert

Otto and Astrid perform as a dysfunctional brother-and-sister rock duo who seem permanently close to falling out.

The show mixes live music, absurd comedy and deliberately awkward sibling rivalry. Otto wants something emotional and spectacular, while Astrid appears to want a straightforward rock show without interruptions.

That difference of opinion drives much of the comedy.

2. The chaos is carefully planned

The show is designed to feel unpredictable, with arguments, unauthorised songs and regular attempts to take control of the performance.

Although it may look as though everything is going wrong, the pair have been performing together for years and the chaos is tightly constructed.

The audience is also drawn into the show, becoming part of the running jokes and occasional after-party plans.

3. The songs are strange but catchy

The music covers subjects including dinosaurs working in burger restaurants, robots mistaken for lions and second-best friends whose names nobody can remember.

The lyrics are ridiculous, but the songs themselves are proper rock and pop numbers influenced by punk, new wave and Europop.

Their song The Situation recently reached a much wider audience after a clip attracted more than 2.5 million views on TikTok.

4. They have built a genuine international following

Otto and Astrid have performed at Glastonbury and toured across the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

Their audience has grown gradually through years of live performances, although the recent success of The Situation has introduced them to plenty of new people.

They have also attracted some well-known supporters, including Johnny Knoxville, Boy George and P!nk.

5. The Soho shows are a warm-up for Edinburgh

The London performances take place shortly before Otto and Astrid begin a month-long run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

This makes the Soho Theatre dates a chance to see the show in a relatively small venue before the longer festival run begins.

Despite all the shouting, glitter and rock-star posturing, the show also explores the strange bond between two siblings who drive each other mad but clearly need each other.
