5 Things to Know About The Boy at the Back of the Class Returning in 2026 at the Rose Theatre

The hugely popular stage adaptation of The Boy at the Back of the Class is back in 2026, opening at Kingston’s Rose Theatre before heading out on a full UK tour. Based on the award-winning children’s novel, this is one of those rare shows that genuinely works for schools, families and grown-ups.

1. It opens at the Rose Theatre before a major UK tour

The 2026 production opens at the Rose Theatre in Kingston upon Thames from 6–22 February 2026, with previews from 6 February and a press night on 11 February.

After its Kingston run, the show embarks on a wide UK tour through to May, visiting major venues including Bristol Old Vic, Edinburgh Festival Theatre, Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, The Lowry in Salford and Cardiff New Theatre.

2. It’s based on a multi-award-winning children’s book

The stage show is adapted from Onjali Q. Raúf’s bestselling novel The Boy at the Back of the Class, which won both the Blue Peter Book Award and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize.

The story follows Ahmet, a nine-year-old refugee joining a new school, and the classmates who come up with “the greatest idea in the world” to help reunite him with his family. Told from a child’s perspective, it balances humour and heart beautifully.

3. The creative team is seriously impressive

The adaptation is by writer and broadcaster Nick Ahad, with direction by award-winning director Monique Touko. Their collaboration ensures the production is fast-paced, emotionally intelligent and perfectly pitched for family audiences.

The wider creative team includes experienced designers, movement and sound specialists, giving the show a polished, high-quality feel rather than a simple “book on stage” adaptation.

4. A strong cast brings the story to life

The 2026 cast includes Serkan Avlik as Ahmet, alongside Sasha Desouza-Willock, Abdul-Malik Janneh, Petra Joan-Athene, Natasha Lewis and others.

The production blends returning performers with exciting professional debuts, and several cast members have personal or professional connections to the themes explored in the show, adding depth and authenticity.

5. Ideal for families, schools and first-time theatre-goers

With an age guidance of 7+, this is an excellent choice for families and school trips. The story opens up thoughtful discussions about kindness, friendship and refugee experiences without ever feeling heavy-handed.

The Rose Theatre is also partnering with local charity Refugee Action Kingston during the run, grounding the production firmly in the local community.

Bottom line: if you’re looking for theatre that’s uplifting, funny and quietly important, The Boy at the Back of the Class is one of the standout family shows of 2026.
