Whipsnade Zoo has some rather unusual visitors this summer: twelve towering trolls! These giant creatures have set up camp at the UK’s largest zoo, and they’re ready to meet humans big and small. If you’re looking for an unforgettable day out, here are five reasons not to miss Trolls: A Field Study, running from 21 June to 22 September.
1. Giants Built from Twigs and Trash
These trolls are true works of art, crafted entirely from recycled materials like wooden pallets, fallen branches and twigs. Danish artist and environmental activist Thomas Dambo has brought them to life, with some standing an impressive 9ft tall. They’re quirky, eye-catching and perfect for photos—proof that rubbish can become something magical.
2. Every Troll Has Its Own Personality
Each troll on the trail has a unique pose and personality. You’ll find Hasse pulling a cheeky face high up on a hill, encouraging visitors to see the world from a new angle. Over near the giraffe house, Birch keeps watch with a measuring stick, while Lilnut lurks by the lions, swinging her net in search of unsuspecting humans to study. No two trolls are the same, making the trail full of surprises.

3. Go on a Troll Treasure Hunt
These trolls have arrived at Whipsnade Zoo to study humans—and they need your help! Pick up a Trolls Treasure Hunt Map and follow the trail to complete fun, nature-themed tasks and crafts along the way. It’s a brilliant way for kids (and grown-ups) to explore the zoo, learn about wildlife and enjoy some hands-on activities.
4. Wildlife Wonders Along the Way
While you’re searching for trolls, don’t forget the real stars of Whipsnade Zoo: the animals. You’ll pass giraffes, lions, and even the zoo’s aquarium, home to some of the world’s rarest and most endangered fish. The trolls are dotted throughout the zoo’s beautiful landscapes, so you’ll get plenty of chances to discover incredible wildlife as you explore.
5. A Feel-Good Day Out
Beyond the fun and games, the troll takeover is also a reminder of how connected we are to nature. Spending time outdoors is great for mental wellbeing, and Whipsnade Zoo’s conservation work helps protect endangered species around the world. By visiting, you’re not only having a brilliant day out—you’re supporting vital wildlife conservation too.
