Adapt or Fall Behind: Why Your Career Needs a Startup Mindset by Kathryn Hall.

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent—it is the one most adaptable to change.”
Charles Darwin

You know, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how much careers have changed, and how fast they continue to evolve. It’s not like the old days, such as in my parents’ generation and to some degree in my generation too, where you joined a company and just steadily climbed the ladder.

These days? It’s a lot more like running a startup.

And honestly, that mindset can make all the difference.

You’re not just building a career anymore … you’re building You Inc. You’re the founder, the product, the marketing team, and the strategist, all rolled into one.

Here’s my 6 tips as to what that looks like in practice:

1. You’re the CEO of You Inc.

Startups don’t wait around for someone to hand them a roadmap; they figure it out as they go.

Same with your career. You’re the one steering the ship.

So, it’s worth regularly asking yourself:

  • What am I working toward?
  • What value do I bring to the table?
  • Where do I actually want to go next?

Being intentional matters. It’s easy to drift, but founders don’t drift—they decide. And you should, too.

2. Invest in R&D: Keep Learning

If a startup stops innovating, it falls behind. And that applies to your skills, too.

Upskilling doesn’t have to mean formal qualifications—sometimes it’s about reading, listening, shadowing, experimenting. But the point is: keep moving. Keep growing.

And let me tell you, change isn’t new.

When I first started in HR, we used to fax job ads to the local newspaper. Can you imagine? Then it shifted to online job boards, and later, applicant tracking systems came in to help manage the candidate experience.

Fast forward to now … we’ve had Brexit, Covid-19, and now AI, all shaking things up in different ways. AI especially is already influencing how we source, assess, and select candidates in some organisations due to the volume of applications received … and it’s only going to grow.

It’s also starting to change what we do in our roles.

So yeah, staying still? Not really an option.

3. Build a Brand People Trust

You don’t have to be “internet famous,” but people should know what you stand for and what you’re good at.

Whether it’s through LinkedIn, contributing to projects, mentoring others, or just being someone people trust, your personal brand matters. It tells people, “This is who I am, and this is the value I bring.”

“If you don’t tell your story, someone else will tell it for you.”

4. Use Feedback as Fuel

Startups rely heavily on feedback—market signals, customer reviews, investor opinions. They learn from all of it.

Same goes for us. Whether it’s a formal review or a passing comment from a colleague, treat feedback like data.

  • What’s working?
  • What’s not?
  • How do I adjust?

And if you’ve taken a wrong turn? That’s okay. Pivot. That’s not failure—it’s progress.

5. Network Like Your Career Depends on It (Because It Does)

No one builds anything meaningful in isolation. Startups grow through relationships—so do we.

Some of the best opportunities don’t come from job ads, they come from conversations.

So be curious.
Show up.
Build real, lasting connections—not just LinkedIn adds, but genuine relationships that go both ways.

6. Stay Agile—Be Ready to Pivot

The world changes fast. Roles change. Industries evolve. Life throws curveballs.

So don’t get too rigid in your plans. A lateral move, a short contract, a total shift in direction—sometimes those “side steps” end up accelerating your growth more than anything else.

With AI starting to automate tasks, reshape roles, and rewire industries, being adaptable isn’t just a nice-to-have … it’s essential.

Final Thoughts: Your Career Is a Living Product

Startups don’t wait for permission to launch, and neither should you.

Treat your career like the ever-evolving, messy, exciting startup that it is. Stay curious. Stay brave.

Keep learning. Keep building.

Because in today’s world, the people who thrive aren’t the ones who follow the old playbook.

They’re the ones who write their own.
