Five Lessons for Embracing Change and Finding Joy

By Susan Pallister, Founder and Host of The Independent Teacher Podcast

In February this year, I attended my first ever pop concerts in over 38 years. I saw the brilliant Alison Moyet and the amazing Elkie Brooks – more on those unforgettable nights below. I began my teaching career in 1987 and left the profession in 2021, so here are five things to consider when you move on to the next stage of your life. Just note – we never use the ‘R’ word in our household!

One: Try Not to Let Your Career Define You

I was probably guilty of that in my 40s, when I was rising up the career ladder. While professional achievements are laudable and can contribute to personal growth, don’t neglect family, friends and your life outside of work.

Two: Find a New Sense of Purpose

When you leave behind a successful career, having a new sense of purpose will help enormously. I decided to try my hand at podcasting, launching The Independent Teacher in 2021; it was a wonderful experience and gave me the opportunity to talk to so many interesting guests from all over the world.

Three: Don’t Worry About How Others View You

Never spend too much time worrying about how others view you, and avoid perfectionism. Alison Moyet has a great new song ‘The Impervious Me’ that delves into the complexities of self-image and societal expectations. She invites listeners to reflect on the importance of embracing vulnerability and remaining true to oneself, even in the face of adversity. Excellent advice Alison!

Four: Embrace the Joy of Live Music

If you get the chance, book some tickets to see Elkie Brooks, the renowned English blues and jazz singer, who is currently on her ‘Long Farewell Tour’. At the age of 80, she’s still belting out hits like ‘Pearl’s A Singer’ as well as dancing on stage in 4-inch stilettos! Great fun – I can now definitely call myself an ‘Elkieholic’.

Five: Live in the Moment

Finally, as I’ve got older, I’ve realised how important it is to ‘live in the moment’. Do all the things that make you feel happy and fulfilled. We’re living through some really challenging times in terms of geopolitical events, and I know it sounds very idealistic, but there’s still so much beauty and richness in the world – try not to lose sight of that.
