The UK premiere of The White Chip is heading to Southwark Playhouse Borough this summer, and it’s not your typical theatre night out. This razor-sharp, deeply personal and unexpectedly funny play about addiction and recovery has already made waves Off-Broadway—now it’s London’s turn. Here are five reasons to grab a ticket before it sells out.

1. A Groundbreaking Story with Heart
The White Chip tells the semi-autobiographical story of Steven McAlister, a man seemingly at the top of his game—career success, marriage, artistic acclaim—while quietly unravelling under the weight of addiction. What sets this story apart is its rare blend of raw honesty, humour, and hope. It’s not just about hitting rock bottom; it’s about what happens next, and how messy, awkward, and life-affirming recovery can be.
2. An Award-Winning Team On and Off Stage
The UK premiere is co-produced by Danielle Tarento, a leading light in London’s theatre scene, and Annaleigh Ashford, Tony Award-winning actress and star of Sweeney Todd and Impeachment: American Crime Story. It’s directed by Matt Ryan, with a top-tier creative team including designer Lee Newby, lighting by Jamie Platt, and sound design by Max Pappenheim. With this kind of talent behind it, expect a production that’s both polished and profoundly affecting.
3. Comedy and Catharsis in Equal Measure
While the subject matter is serious, Sean Daniels’ writing is disarmingly funny. The show doesn’t shy away from the chaos of addiction—but it finds humour in the darkest places. That laughter is never cheap; it’s earned, and it brings audiences closer to the truth of what recovery actually feels like. It’s no wonder the New York run received a coveted New York Times Critics’ Pick.
4. Changing the Conversation Around Addiction
The White Chip is more than a play—it’s a platform for change. The production is partnering with Performing Recovery, a creative recovery organisation, with a portion of ticket sales supporting their work. After-show events include tarot-style readings by Leon Clowes, support conversations, and panel discussions tackling stigma and sobriety. This is theatre with purpose.
5. Perfectly Timed for a New Conversation in UK Theatre
The UK has seen growing awareness of mental health and addiction issues in recent years, but rarely do we see these themes explored on stage with such nuance and humour. This production arrives at exactly the right moment to deepen that conversation, challenge taboos, and offer audiences a truly meaningful night out.
