Oliver! Revival at the Gielgud: A Polished and Vibrant Spectacle

The latest revival of Oliver! at the Gielgud Theatre is a polished and energetic affair that, while faithful to the spirit of Lionel Bart’s beloved musical, occasionally leans too heavily into its crowd-pleasing instincts. Directed with flair and a clear eye for spectacle, this production is a masterclass in theatrical precision, but at times it plays things a little too safe.

The design is undeniably striking, conjuring a vibrant and bustling Dickensian London that is as grimy as it is grand. The set transitions seamlessly between the oppressive workhouse, the bustling streets, and Fagin’s chaotic den. It’s a visual feast that feels richly detailed without overshadowing the story. However, the real strength of this production lies in its cast.

Simon Lipkin delivers a standout performance as Fagin, finding the humanity in a character often reduced to pantomime villainy. His “Reviewing the Situation” is a high point—performed with both comic timing and a touch of melancholia that brings new depth to the role. Shanay Holmes is equally compelling as Nancy, her powerful voice commanding the stage during “As Long As He Needs Me,” a performance brimming with both defiance and vulnerability.

The ensemble, led by an enthusiastic group of young actors, injects the show with vitality. Numbers such as “Consider Yourself” and “I’d Do Anything” are performed with infectious energy, the choreography both crisp and dynamic. It’s a testament to the production’s ability to breathe life into well-worn classics.

Yet for all its charm and technical proficiency, there’s a sense that this Oliver! is more interested in entertaining than unsettling. The darker undercurrents of Dickens’ original story—poverty, exploitation, and abuse—are present but feel diluted, smoothed over in favour of a more palatable, family-friendly tone. It’s a choice that makes the production accessible but robs it of some dramatic weight.

That said, this is a production that knows its audience. It delivers what many will expect from Oliver!—a visually stunning, musically rich experience that celebrates the enduring appeal of Bart’s score. For those seeking a polished night at the theatre, it hits all the right notes. But for those hoping for a more daring or subversive interpretation, this Oliver! may leave you wanting a little more.
