Dear Evan Hansen is making its highly anticipated stop at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking from 29th October to 2nd November 2024. Starring Ryan Kopel and Sonny Monaghan, this fresh new production of the Olivier, Tony, and Grammy award-winning musical brings a unique take on the much-loved story. We sat down with Ryan and Sonny to discuss their journey to landing the iconic role, how they connect with the show’s powerful themes, and what audiences can expect from this new tour.

10 Question Q&A with Ryan and Sonny of Dear Evan Hansen

1. How did you both land the role of Evan Hansen in this new production?

Ryan: “I went through five auditions over three months. The final one was in March, and I found out while on the Tube. I had to get off the train to scream – I was so excited!”

Sonny: “I saw a post on TikTok about auditions, so I sent in a video of me singing ‘Words Fail’. After three rounds, I got the call. It was a dream come true.”

2. What was your first encounter with Dear Evan Hansen?

Ryan: “I didn’t see the original production, but Dear Evan Hansen was such a cultural phenomenon that I knew all about it without knowing the full story. The audition process really introduced me to the depth of it.”

Sonny: “I first saw it on Broadway during a family trip and loved it so much I went to see it again in the West End.”

3. How do you approach playing such an iconic character, especially after Ben Platt’s performance?

Ryan: “Ben Platt was iconic, but the creative team has given me the freedom to find my own Evan. The writing is so good, I can just trust my instincts and bring something fresh.”

Sonny: “We’ve been allowed to explore the character in our own way, which is really freeing. There’s no set way to do things, and that makes it exciting.”

4. How has the rehearsal process been with two Evans in the production?

Sonny: “Ryan and the main cast work with the director to build the show. Then I come in later to learn my alternate role. I’ve also got to learn other parts like Connor and Jared, so it’s a lot to juggle.”

Ryan: “Yeah, I’ve got it easy – I just focus on Evan! Sonny has to learn about ‘90 million’ different things!”

5. The musical deals with mental health and bullying. How has that shaped your preparation for the role?

Ryan: “We had training from The Mix, a UK charity, on how to handle these sensitive issues. It was really eye-opening, and it’s good to know we’re prepared to guide people to the right support if needed.”

Sonny: “It’s great to know there’s support out there. The Mix helped us understand how to respond to anyone who might be affected by what they see in the show.”

6. What message do you hope people take away from Dear Evan Hansen?

Ryan: “For me, it’s all about hope. No matter what you’re going through, there’s always someone to talk to and a reason to keep going.”

Sonny: “I hope people realise the importance of talking to someone. The show really highlights that, and I think it could be a blessing for many.”

7. Do you have a favourite song to perform?

Sonny: “For Forever. It’s such a beautiful and emotional moment in the show, and it’s always a highlight for me.”

Ryan: “Words Fail. It’s a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. You can really let go, and if your voice cracks, it’s fine – you’re meant to be an emotional mess!”

8. How has the staging changed since the original production?

Ryan: “The technology we use in our everyday lives has evolved so much, and it’s interesting to see how that changes the way the story is told now in 2024. It’s given the show a fresh new feel.”

Sonny: “Yeah, everything about the staging is different from the original. It’s exciting to be part of something that feels so new.”

9. How do you handle nerves before a performance?

Ryan: “I’m always nervous, but I see it as a good thing. It means you care, and I use that to push myself to give the best performance.”

Sonny: “It’s like what athletes say – you’ve got to channel your nerves and adrenaline into your performance. It helps you give it your all.”

10. If you were to write a letter to yourself like Evan does in the show, what would it say?

Ryan: “Dear Ryan, today is going to be a good day because you can take it one hour at a time. Just keep going.”

Sonny: “Dear Sonny, today is going to be a good day because you’ve worked hard to get here, and you deserve it.”
